If you’ll be in or near the Santa Monica area this July, and you’re looking for a fun weekend activity my friend Rebecca Heller (author of “Surf Like a Girl”) is hosting a surf workshop along with Perfect Day Surf Camp where you can learn to surf in an all female, non-competitive and girl friendly environment.   It’s sponsored by Roxy and here are all the details for the weekend:

Who: All the ladies (ages 17 and up, please)
When: Saturday, July 18 and Sunday, July 19
Time: 9 - 11am  (Please arrive by 8:45am)
Where: Santa Monica Beach, Parking Lot #9 North of the Pier
What to bring: Wear a bathing suit and sunscreen. Bring a towel and water. We will supply wetsuits and foam surfboards.
Cost: $150 both days/$80 one day

If this sounds like fun (and trust me, it will be!) then email Rebecca (rebecca [at] surflikeagirl [dot] net) to sign up for the weekend. Maybe I’ll see you out on the waves!

Whether you’re wondering what to do with last year’s prom dress or looking to find an affordable gown for the big event, check out DonateMyDress.org, a national organization that brings together all the dress drive organizations across the U.S. and helps you find a local shop to give or get a prom dress.  The site also boasts features like a photo gallery to get inspiration for your prom look, a place to post your prom stories, plus quizzes, polls, and more.  Once you’ve had your amazing night, consider donating your dress to a local shop and make another girl’s prom dream come true.  Have a wonderful weekend!

There is a GREAT site you have to check out called The Girl Project.  It’s a national collection of photographs taken by teenage girls that represent girlhood and life as seen through the eyes of young women in America. I am so impressed by the originality and rawness of the photographs, and the cool thing is that you can be part of this project if you’re a girl between the ages of 13-18.

Visit the website, send an email to Kate, and The Girl Project will send you a disposable camera with which you’re supposed to document your life with interesting photographs.  Once you’ve finished the roll of film, send the camera back to The Girl Project, and your photographs may be featured on The Girl Project website and potentially in their soon-to-be-released book.  Check out The Girl Project blog to get an idea of the types of creative shots they like to see.

There are some exciting things happening over at Seventeen.  They recently launched Seventeen Get Advice! which allows users to ask and answer questions to their heart’s content with sections covering guys, beauty, fitness, prom, sex, money, family, fashion, entertainment, and, of course, college!  I’m a featured college expert, so you can check out my advice and ask me questions by looking up 17collegeadvicegirl on the site. The thing I’m most excited about is the chance to answer specific questions about college from girls across the country (and world) in a real-time manner.  Hope you’re having a great week, and maybe I’ll see you soon on Seventeen’s Get Advice!

So I haven’t done a lot of actual purchasing of Christmas gifts yet this year, but I have done a ton of web research looking for cute, unique, and affordable items.

Today I stumbled upon my new favorite accessory designer, Kailo Chic who has maybe the most adorable line of frame clutch wallets I’ve ever seen.  Not only are they super cute on the outside, but I love the colorful inner liner and oh-so-functional credit card dividers.

They’re even reasonably priced at $32, so now I just need to figure who exactly on my list is going to get one.

No, that’s not her latest film or SNL role, but Amy’s real life web media venture “Smart Girls At the Party.” Amy hosts these fun and empowering webisodes that feature tween guests talking about their life and talents.  Check out the premiere featuring 10 year old writer Cameron (and special guest appearances from Kristen Wiig and Will Arnett!).  I heart Amy P!

I love it when I stumble across awesome products that make me feel totally justified in spending a little extra cash: the super cute Splendid Breast Cancer Awareness tank, my Product (Red) iPod, and weekly treks to the Farmer’s Market in support of local food suppliers.

My latest obsession is the new clothing site Zelaz.  It features affordable and comfortable fashion designs for tweens, teens, and juniors. A self-described store with a conscience, Zelaz gives back to the community by dedicating 5% of revenues to worthy causes that help girls with fewer resources. Every purchase supports charities that help girls succeed.  Plus, their clothes are pretty cute, too!

As if that wasn’t incentive enough to shop, shipping is a flat-rate of $5 whether you buy one item or 15.  Check out Zelaz.com to see their latest sales and offerings.

Living near the beach justifies my healthy collection of tank tops–I think they’re super cute for pairing with your go-to jeans or underneath a blazer with some fun accessories for a dressier look.  And now Splendid has given me yet another reason to purchase one more of my favorite staples. Their latest tank is an exclusive, cute (and charitable) design–$5 from each tank goes to The Breast Cancer Research Foundation!

How’s that for some feel-good shopping?!

To get your very own tank, visit Splendid. And for 3 ways to wear the look, check out Seventeen’s Style Blog!

This year I’m heading back to high school (as a documentary filmmaker), so of course I had to stock up on some back-to-school production supplies. Here are the items I am loving right now…

This super cute shoulderbag from Kissycake is perfect for holding my production notebook and pens.  Plus, you can custom order the strap for your height and choose from a selection of animals.  I like Mr. Giraffe, but Octopus and Bird are pretty cute, too.  ($35 Red Giraffe Bag)

I’m kind of in love with these pens from mmmg.  Choose from a brown bear of the forest, a polar bear from the north, a cloud that is always smiling or a peaceful white dove. ($5 Uppercase Gallery)

And the perfect place to keep my polar bear pen is in this cute Mosaic Zipper Purse from Tepper Jackson!  I have my girlfriends Lisa and Nicole to thank for keeping me in style with this awesome bday present.  Get your own at Pajamamania!  ($24.95 Tepper Jackson Mosaic Zipper Purse)

What are your favorite back-to-school must-haves?
